This anthology of stories introduces us to the richness of the experience and culture of Latin Americans -- the people of jade and iron. Children will find a sampling of Latin American tale-telling, including exciting legends of warriors, princesses, volcanoes and magicians. Illustrations are by Luis Garay, whose work reviewers have said is akin in its tone and scope to the work of Diego Rivera (Publisher's Weekly, starred review).
Patrica Aldana is the author of Jade and Iron and Under the Spell of the Moon.
Luis Garay is a celebrated Nicaraguan illustrator who spent six months in Guatemala doing research for the illustrations in this book. He has also illustrated Jade and Iron, A Handful of Seeds, Cousins / Primas and Alfredito Flies Home / Alfredito regresa volando a su casa. One of the best young Latin American illustrators working today, Luis Garay now lives in Mexico.
Hugh Hazelton is a multilingual poet and translator who won a Governor General's Award for his translation of Vetiver by Joel Des Rosiers. He lives in Montreal.
"Meticulous cross-hatching lends volume and texture to the figures in his carefully planned compositions. Jade and Iron deserves attention not only for these striking illustrations, but also for the glimpse it provides into the multifaceted folklore of Latin America" Horn Book
