Recommended Resources for Aboriginal History Month
We recently held our last Beers & Books of the season with Henderson Brewery, and it was one to remember: a discussion of Katherena Vermette’s The Break between Candy Palamater and Tanya Talaga, moderated by Jael Richardson. The sound of beer brewing in the background was a lively accompaniment to the ideas fermenting on stage.
At the end of the night, during the Q&A, Candy, Tanya and Jael had no shortage of recommendations on how people can find and listen to more indigenous and minority voices. Here are a few resources they suggested:
Check out CBC Books’s “Indigenous writers to read, as recommended by you” list
CBC Books has a running list Indigenous writers you should be reading – check out the list, be sure to read as many titles as you can, and check back often to see the latest updates.
Read an Indigenous Publication
Windspeaker is Canada’s most widely circulated Indigenous news publication and the most effective means of reaching First Nations, Métis and Inuit readers.
SAY Magazine is a lifestyle magazine for and about Native people, reaching key influencers & grassroots
Follow indigenous and minority writers and news networks on social media
Check out the Diverse Writers Twitter list curated by the FOLD festival
APTN’s Facebook Page. Candy and Tanya recommend “liking” and then checking in once or twice a week to like posts or to keep up to date with what is going on.
Tune into an indigenous news Network
Check out CBC Indigenous News and APTN!
Have any other resources you recommend people should check out? Let us know on Twitter and we’ll update this post! Thank you to Candy and Tanya for their suggestions!
