House of Anansi Press and Groundwood Books’ Commitment to Diversity
House of Anansi Press was founded on the concept that Canadians want to read books written by Canadians. Over fifty years later we continue that tradition, endeavouring to publish books that reflect the changing nature of the world and the country. We take pride in finding and developing talent, publishing writers from a variety of backgrounds, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, and bringing a wide array of voices and life experiences to readers around the world.
Likewise, Groundwood Books was founded on the idea of publishing books for and about children whose experiences of the world have been underrepresented elsewhere. We are proud to have worked alongside authors and illustrators of diverse cultures, languages, and experiences, publishing books for over forty years that function as both mirrors and windows for children from all walks of life.
House of Anansi Press and Groundwood Books recognize that publishing diverse books is just one side of the story, and to truly combat racism and a lack of representation in the literary world we must also look inwards and ensure that the people who edit, produce, sell, and publicize our books also reflect the diversity of our list and our readership. To that end, we have made a commitment to do better, to look inwards at our own racial and social prejudices, and to combat the systemic lack of diversity and equity in the Canadian publishing industry.
In June 2020, a Diversity and Inclusion Committee made up of staff from all levels was formed, and since its inception the committee's areas of focus, in collaboration with our president, senior managers, and HR consultant, include reviewing our hiring practices, implementing diversity training for employees, and creating career development opportunities for staff at all levels. The committee also serves as a safe space for staff to openly discuss any issues within the company, the industry, and the community at large.
We recognize this work must be ongoing. We will continue to build an inclusive workplace culture and we will evaluate our goals and actions as we move forward. Ultimately, we aim to increase the diversity of our workforce and continue expanding the diversity of our books. We believe that a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment promotes excellence, allows all staff to reach their greatest potential, and furthers House of Anansi Press and Groundwood Books’ mission to publish Very Good Books.
