My father made the house himself and we lived in a tent pitched in a meadow surrounded by forest while he built it. My mother told me this. I remember the tent was green and there was a path through the meadow to the house. I loved this path, which cut through the tall grasses. In the meadow, purple vetch threaded up through the grass stems and touched my mother’s round belly. The grasses grew so high they were taller than me, but I could look up and see how they touched my mother’s breasts. I drew pictures on her stomach with icing coloured with beet and carrot juice. Then she’d let me lick it off. The acreage was mostly forest, except for the clearing around a large, rickety barn. They put a sandbox in the clearing where I played with my pail and shovel.

There was also a path through the woods. It was a twisting path my father had cut through the pines to the clifftop jutting out from the trees over the Bay of Fundy. He called the path “the labyrinth of life.” It snaked through the forest to the perilous brink of the cliff. The path was difficult and winding, with sharp turns where you had to slow down. My father said this was the main purpose of his pathway: everyone was forced to stop hurrying and consider their journey as it unfolded. People needed to be open to sudden turns and trust the way ahead. Being in the moment would take over and time would lose meaning. Before you knew it, you would arrive at your destination, and le voilà, enlightenment, or éclaircissement, as the French Acadians say, when you reached the bench of wisdom! Every age had an awakening, her father said, with those like him, who were called to be its prophets, ushering in the awakening. On a clear day you could stand at the edge of the cliff and see all the way down the bay toward Maine, which was four exhilarating hours away by boat as the crow flies or a long, boring two-day drive by car, as my father explained.

The bench at the edge of the crumbling cliff my father had made from driftwood, which the elements had cast to a silvery white. In Maya mythology the first men and women are even said to be made of corn. It has been an important food for people in Central America for centuries, and one of the most delicious things you can make using corn masa and husks are tamalitos, or little tamales.

In simple poetic language, Argueta shows young cooks how to mix and knead the dough before dropping a spoonful into a cornhusk, wrapping it up and then steaming the little package. He once again makes cooking a full sensory experience, including beating on a pot like a drum, dancing the corn dance, delighting in the smell of corn masa … And at the end, he suggests inviting the whole family to come and enjoy the delicious tamalitos “made of corn with love.”

Domi’s vivid paintings, featuring a sister and her little brother making tamalitos together, are a perfect accompaniment to the colorful text.

Key Text Features
procedural text
recipe

Correlates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.7
With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.7
Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting)

"OtherText_Back_cover_copy_0":"

The final book in the successful Cooking Poems series.

Combines reading with a fun activity the whole family can participate in; steps that require adult supervision are marked.

Bilingual text appeals to parents who want to expose their children to another language at an early age.

Written by an award-winning author and poet who is very active on the speaking circuit at schools and libraries.

","OtherText_Long_description_1":"

","OtherText_Review_0":"
“Even for novice chefs (and readers) the ‘Ummmm’s are easily attainable.” — Kirkus Reviews
","OtherText_Review_0_Src":"Kirkus Reviews","OtherText_Review_1":"
“Domi’s paintings communicate plenty of enthusiasm, and readers may feel the pull to ‘Baila la danza del maíz.” — Publisher's Weekly
","OtherText_Review_1_Src":"Publisher's Weekly","OtherText_Review_2":"
“Argueta’s latest cooking poem, essentially a recipe, serves up playful prose in both Spanish and English, and is complemented by Domi’s broadly stroked, saturated watercolors.” — Booklist
","OtherText_Review_2_Src":"Booklist","OtherText_ShortDescription_0":"Another playful book in the popular bilingual Cooking Poem series that shows that tamalitos, or little tamales, are easy to make!
Another playful book in the popular bilingual Cooking Poem series that shows that tamalitos, or little tamales, are easy to make!
Un poema para cocinar / A Cooking Poem","teachersguide_0":"https://biblioshare.org/BNCservices/BNCServices.asmx/Samples?token=fcf85c1c1b298e99&ean=9781773064093&SAN=&Perspective=teachersguide&FileNumber=0
7.25
in"} ages 4 to 7 / grades K to 2
