Meet Anansi's Acquiring Editors!
KAREN BROCHU is Publisher of House of Anansi Press. She began her career in marketing and sales at John Wiley and Sons, before moving to Anansi in 2016 as the National Accounts Manager. From there she became Sales Director and then VP Sales and Marketing. Karen is a former president of the Ontario Book Publishers Organization and is a current board member. Her favourite food is pizza and in Toronto she thinks the best slice can be found at Big Trouble!
DOUGLAS RICHMOND is Editorial Director of House of Anansi Press, where he works on a diverse list of bestselling and award-winning titles ranging from literary and speculative fiction to cookbooks and narrative nonfiction. Prior to joining Anansi in 2016, he was an editor at HarperCollins Canada and the University of Toronto Press. Doug is an audiophile and craft beer enthusiast and will happily discuss the intricacies of pairing the right record with the right beer.
SHIRAROSE WILENSKY joined House of Anansi Press as an editor in 2021. Prior to that, she attended Simon Fraser University’s Master of Publishing Program and worked for Arsenal Pulp Press, Greystone Books, Douglas & McIntyre, and Harbour Publishing. She won the Editors Canada Tom Fairley Award for editing Butter Honey Pig Bread by francesca ekwuyasi. She specializes in literary upmarket fiction and narrative nonfiction by BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, and emerging writers. Shirarose lives in Port Moody, BC, and loves juicy celebrity gossip!
SHIVAUN HEARNE is a Jamaican Canadian editor who joined House of Anansi Press at the start of 2022 after more than two decades in Caribbean-focused scholarly publishing at the University of the West Indies Press. Over her career, she has edited everything from pharmaceutical pamphlets to award-winning history books, and at Anansi, she’s looking for books that surprise her or spark her curiosity as she acquires both fiction and nonfiction. Scrabble is perhaps the most-used app on her phone.
KEVIN CONNOLLY has been the imprint editor for Anansi Poetry since February 2017. Prior to that, he was a poetry editor at McClelland & Stewart and Coach House Books. He has edited more than sixty collections of poetry, many of them award winners and finalists, and is himself an award-winning poet with five published books, three of them with Anansi. Kevin has a soft spot for arena rock, and he does not get email on his phone (don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it).
LESLIE JOY AHENDA is Assistant Editor at House of Anansi Press. She was educated in the writing department at the University of Victoria and holds an MFA from the University of Guelph. Leslie is a published poet and is currently working on her debut collection of poetry. Her favourite film is the Walt Disney Company’s 2007 cinematic masterpiece Ratatouille.
