Three fascinating interviews with Wade Davis

Wade Davis
Wade Davis, Massey Lecturer and author of The Wayfinders, had a very busy weekend.

WATCH:

Will the world end in 2012? Watch Wade on ABC’s Good Morning America, talking about the Mayan calendar’s prediction that 2012 marks the beginning of an apocalypse. In the interview, Wade cheerily allays our fears: “To look at a single date and draw conclusions is just an apocalyptic fantasy, really.”

The Wayfinders

READ:

When a language disappears, do we lose a piece of humanity? Wade is featured as an expert on the subject in Saturday’s Toronto Star: “The more you explore the nuances of language, the more you find that language is such a reflection of the spirit of place,” he says. “Language encodes the knowledge of people.”

LISTEN:

Wade spoke with KDNK Community Radio about The Wayfinders: “We hear a lot about the loss of biodiversity, but no biologist would suggest that 50 percent of plants and animals are on the brink of extinction. And yet that, the most apocalyptic scenario in the realm of biology, scarcely approaches what we know to be the most optimistic scenario in the realm of language loss.”

My personal favourite is the Good Morning America interview, for sheer entertainment value. What do you think about the 2012 hype? Do you trust Wade’s dismissal of it all?
