He settled among the Huron, or Ouendat, people in what is now Midland, Ontario. Despite his missionary zeal, Brébeuf was sensitive to the people with whom he lived. He learned their language and he wrote, in Huron, the original version of this famous Christmas carol. In the end, inspired by an early memory, Sienna comes up with her own idea for a drawing that’s perfect for the art show.

The Last Two Crayons looks at the beautiful world of brown, with a heartwarming and empowering ending that celebrates diversity, creativity and family.

Key Text Features

dialogue

illustrations

vignettes

Correlates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.2

Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.4

Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.7

Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

9781773066233","guide_0":"https://biblioshare.org/BNCservices/BNCServices.asmx/Samples?token=fcf85c1c1b298e99&ean=9781773066233&SAN=&Perspective=guide&FileNumber=0
"OtherText_Back_cover_copy_0":"

As a child, Leah was inspired by the picture book Brown Is a Beautiful Color by Jean Carey Bond to see beauty in the color brown, and she wanted to write a similarly empowering story for a new generation.

Though books with a similar theme have been published before, The Last Two Crayons stands out for its strong character-driven story.

This is Leah’s debut picture book, and Shantala has published just one previous book, which Kirkus called “a magical encounter with nature.”

","OtherText_Review_0":"
A sensitive and age-appropriate tale to spark conversations about skin color.
","OtherText_Review_0_Src":"Kirkus Reviews","OtherText_Review_1":"
A charming debut, accompanied by warm, welcoming illustrations, sure to set off conversations about the language of color and the inclusion of every hue.
","OtherText_Review_1_Src":"School Library Journal","OtherText_Review_2":"
Told through a relatable art class activity with child-friendly vocabulary, this is a good book to celebrate diversity, coming together, and feeling good about who one is.
","OtherText_Review_2_Src":"Children's Literature Comprehensive Database","OtherText_Review_3":"
This is a gentle and affirming picture book about self-acceptance and the importance of family.
","OtherText_Review_3_Src":"School Library Connection","OtherText_Review_4":"
A heartwarming picture book [that] champions diversity while still remaining grounded, realistic and joyful.
","OtherText_Review_4_Src":"CM: Canadian Review of Materials","OtherText_Review_5":"
This is a delightful, inspiring book for first readers … The illustrations … are cute, colourful and extra-large, adding cheerful notes to the text.
","OtherText_Review_5_Src":"Winnipeg Free Press","OtherText_ShortDescription_0":"
Sienna looks forward to drawing a picture for her school’s spring art show, until she ends up with the last two crayons—dark brown and light brown.
","PrizeCodeText_0":"Winner","PrizeCode_0":"01","PrizeName_0":"Ontario Library Association Best Bets","PrizeYear_0":"2024

Sienna looks forward to drawing a picture for her school’s spring art show, until she ends up with the last two crayons—dark brown and light brown.

8.375
in"}

Yellow totally takes over Ella’s waking hours, from the wallpaper in her house to the daffodils on the kitchen table to the clothes she wears, all rendered in a thick, luminous gouache. One night, Ella’s mother introduces her to a new type of yellow: the soft, butter-yellow moon of the horizon brings with it glowing fireflies. Against the dark backdrop of the night sky, these yellows get a chance to act as the spotlight. Ella doesn’t learn to confront her fears; she learns to approach them with a new perspective.
